Stone town also known as Mji Mkongwe (the old Town) is a Heart and Soul of Zanzibar. The view on streets is decorated by its famed 19th Century buildings, especially their ornamental doors carved out of Mahogany or teak. Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa whereby its architecture mostly is dating back to the 19th Century reflecting the diverse influences underlying the Swahili Culture, giving a unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. Hence the Town was designated as a UNESCO World heritage Site in 2000.
